Extension 1: Doorways

We invite you to use doorways as a metaphor.

Open the document called Stimulus Material to view this week's challenge.

This week, we are reusing Challenge 1, revisiting the symbolic doorway, and using it to respond to a real-life issue.

Black Lives Matter is an important movement that has been in the news recently after tragic events both here and elsewhere. There have been protests, and this week we want you to respond to the incident that happened in Bristol. You can find information about this in the stimulus booklet.

All three challenges for you to choose from are hard but interesting.

Challenges 2 and 3 are probably the most accessible for younger writers - but they can also be the most challenging for those looking to push themselves or for older writers! They are open ended with lots of options for flexing your writing skills.

If you choose challenge 2 - to write an article arguing for an appropriate replacement statue to be erected in Bristol - you should use persuasive techniques to do this well.

These techniques (among others) are:

  • Anecdotes

  • Flattery

  • Facts

  • Opinions as facts

  • Rhetorical questions

  • Repetition

  • Emotive language

  • Statistics

  • Similes

  • Triples

You should also always:

  1. Use varied and accurate punctuation for effect.

  2. Use paragraphs for clarity and effect.

  3. Check your spelling as well as you can.
